The Las Vegas Massacre: Shots & Chaos

Gunman who killed at least 59 people and injured 527 had cache of dozens of weapons.

A man unleashed a barrage of gunfire from a hotel room onto an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas, in what is now one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history.

The events played out on two stages on Sunday: the streets and festival grounds that became a killing field, and the halls of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino where the police pursued the gunman.

Concertgoers described hearing round after round of gunfire. “This shooting was going on for at least 10 minutes,” said Jake Owen, a country singer who was on stage with Mr. Aldean when the shooting began.

At least 59 people were killed and 527 injured on Sunday when a gunman, identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino into a crowd of 22,000 attending a music festival, before killing himself.

Investigators found 23 weapons, including rifles and pistols, in Mr Paddock’s hotel room and a further 19 at his home, Las Vegas police told a press conference on Monday night. Police also retrieved explosives and several thousands rounds of ammunition at the suspect’s house in Mesquite, a Nevada town about an hour away from the Las Vegas Strip where the shooting occurred.
